The Story
The plan was to attend school, finish her degree, and then move wherever there was work and move up through the entertainment industry. The reality was that the cost of living in Florida at the turn of the century was so low that it was possible to make a decent living within the state but really hard to save up enough money to survive almost anywhere else. The cost of moving is high, the cost of deposits and setup fees is high, and the ability to get hired before relocating is low. You need money to move and money to live while you look for a job, and very few places want to rent to anyone who is "in between" jobs. So Joreth got stuck in Central Florida, bouncing from low-income apartment to room-for-rent, making just enough money to live but never quite saving anything to speak of. After about 2 decades, her partner Franklin, who had just moved to Vancouver, suggested getting married and moving in with him to Canada, where Joreth could at least have healthcare for the first time as an adult. They got married and applied for immigration. Then the immigration rules changed. So they built up the new requirements and applied again. Then the immigration rules changed again. Several years later, they just assumed that Canada was never going to happen. Meanwhile, Joreth remained stuck in Florida while Franklin had to leave Canada and relocated to Portland, Oregon. Finally, in 2025, things started to line up. So Franklin packed his bags for a trip back to the swamp and Joreth tentatively started moving on their plan to remodel an RV and drive it across the country for a combination honeymoon-road trip-move out west. This is the tale of that RV remodel and road trip. |
